What is a digital world? Who is apart of this “digital world?” What does it mean to live in a digital world?
A digital world is a place in which our generation live. A digital world is the world in which we socialise with one another wether that be through technology, devices or media. A digital world is “the human world – existing, emerging and probable – being driven and transformed by technology, and by digitised ICTs, in particular.” (IDI Global, 1988-2017).
The above video explains a little bit more about what the digital world is and how we use it in our everyday lives.
The digital world we live in includes social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat and so on that many of us use on a day-to-day basis. However educational media platforms that can be very useful in the classroom include Youtube, (which can be used to show educational videos) Twitter, (where students can tweet answers to a question, creating a platform for modern day discussions) Kahoot, (live quiz’s during a lesson), and many more.
Above are a few examples of the social media platforms we use in every day life and in the classroom.
Technology is very useful in the classroom for many reasons. Thus being to prepare students for the use of technology in future careers, keeping students engaged in activities and learning, students become more responsible as they are able to take control of their own leaning by making their own decisions and students want to use technology. (Jacqui Murray, 2009-2017)
Social media is hard to avoid. We use it everyday without even realising. Using it in the classroom is essential to provide students with an indication of what the “real world” is like. As media is used commonly in jobs simply through Microsoft programs or even Facebook advertising/pages media will always be important in the real world. If students are able to use it now, it will only further their knowledge as well as preparing them for later life.
